Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Las Vegas Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Gelco chimney caps across Las Vegas, with typical installed prices running between $285 and $540 depending on your flue size and roof access. Most swaps are done in a single visit, and we carry the common Gelco sizes on the truck so you’re not waiting on a special order. The way most Las Vegas homeowners discover their Gelco cap needs attention is either spotting rust streaks down the chimney chase, hearing a loose metal rattle in high wind, or finding water in the firebox after a monsoon storm. If you’re seeing any of those, the cap has likely reached the end of its working life here in the Mojave.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco makes chimney caps in a handful of standard fits, and the right one depends on your flue’s outside diameter, not the brand of your fireplace. The most common units we install in Las Vegas are the single-flue and multi-flue models sized for 6-inch, 8-inch, and 13×13-inch clay tile liners. If you pull the cap off and look at the underside or the collar, you’ll usually find a stamped size like “8” or “13×13” – that’s the measurement that matters. One compatibility gotcha we see regularly: a Gelco cap sized for a round factory-built metal chimney will not seat properly on a square clay tile flue, even if the dimensions look close on a tape measure. The mounting legs and banding are engineered differently. If you’re replacing an existing Gelco cap that rusted out, matching the stamped size is usually enough. If the original wasn’t Gelco and you’re switching brands, we’ll measure the flue on site and confirm the fit before anything is ordered or installed. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Gelco, so we install whatever genuinely fits your chimney – not whatever a brand partnership tells us to push. Aftermarket equivalents exist for the common sizes, and some hold up fine in our climate, but for coastal or heavily windy exposures we typically recommend staying with a Gelco or comparable stainless model rather than a painted steel substitute.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water in the firebox after rain. The cap’s hood or spark arrestor mesh has rusted through or the mounting band has loosened, letting rain run straight down the flue. In Las Vegas, monsoon storms are the testing ground – if your firebox is damp after a downpour, the cap is the first thing to check.
- Rust streaks down the chimney chase or crown. A Gelco cap that’s losing its finish will shed rust that stains the masonry or stucco below. This is usually a sign the cap is plain steel or aging stainless, and replacing it now prevents the staining from getting worse.
- Rattling or banging in high wind. The mounting legs or band that hold the cap to the flue have worked loose over years of thermal expansion and contraction. Las Vegas wind gusts against an unsecured cap can damage the flue tile itself.
- Debris or animal sign inside the fireplace. The mesh on a failing Gelco cap eventually gets holes big enough for birds, bats, or pack rats to get through. In Las Vegas, pigeons nesting in chimneys are a job we see every spring.
- Visible holes or flaking metal on the cap itself. If you can see daylight through the hood from the ground, or the cap has started flaking in sheets, it’s done. No amount of patching will bring back steel that’s reached the flaking stage.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For Las Vegas homeowners, a Gelco-compatible chimney cap installation with us runs between $285 and $540. The spread comes down to three things: size (a 6-inch single-flue cap costs less than a 13×13 multi-flue unit), roof slope and access (steep tile roofs like many in Summerlin take more time and safety rigging), and whether the old cap’s mounting hardware needs cutting off rather than simple unscrewing. That price includes the cap, the mounting hardware, the install, and cleanup. Every job gets a written price before we start, and the number doesn’t change at the door. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise – if the cap works loose or the installation fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. Parts and labor are both covered.
DIY or Call Us?
You can absolutely do the diagnosis yourself: grab a pair of binoculars and check for rust, holes, or a loose mesh from the ground. What we don’t recommend is taking this job onto your roof. A chimney cap swap means working at height on a surface that may be tile, steep-pitched, or both, while handling a metal assembly that turns into a kite in Las Vegas winds. Falls from chimney-height roofs are one of the most common and most preventable residential injuries in our area. Then there’s the fit problem: a cap that looks right but isn’t sealed and banded properly will leak, and you won’t know until the next monsoon. Our techs carry a clamp meter and sizing bands so the cap is fitted before it’s mounted, and every install is guaranteed. If you’d rather have it handled by someone who’s been on hundreds of Las Vegas roofs, call us at (725) 220-6109 and we’ll get you on the schedule.
FAQs
A stainless Gelco cap in Las Vegas typically lasts 8 to 15 years, while painted steel versions often fail in 3 to 6 years due to our UV exposure, monsoon-driven rust, and wind abrasion from desert sand. If you’re buying now, stainless is the better value. Call (725) 220-6109 and we’ll quote you both options so you can decide with real numbers.
It depends on what failed. A loose mounting band can be re-tightened or re-banded, and small patchable areas of surface rust can be treated and sealed. But once the hood or mesh has rusted through or started flaking, repair is a short-term fix at best – and not one we’d put our guarantee on. For most Las Vegas caps showing visible rust-through, replacement is the honest call.
Most Gelco cap replacements take 45 to 90 minutes from setup to cleanup, assuming the flue is in good shape and we’re not also addressing crown damage or liner issues found at the same time. We carry common Gelco sizes on the truck, so the job usually gets done in one visit, not one visit to measure and a second to install.
We keep the common Gelco-compatible sizes for 6-inch, 8-inch, and 13×13 flues on the truck, along with mounting hardware. For oddball sizes or multi-flue spans, we’ll size the cap on site and have it to your door within a few days. Brands we work with beyond Gelco include DuraFlex and HeatShield, so whatever your liner setup is, we’re not trying to force one brand into a job it doesn’t fit.
