Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Copperfield Crown Repair: The Las Vegas Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Copperfield-compatible chimney crowns across Las Vegas, with most crown repairs running between $600 and $1,200 installed depending on the crown’s size and how much of the old material needs to come off first. We keep the most common Copperfield crown dimensions on the truck, so we can usually complete the job in a single visit. Most homeowners discover the problem the same way: they spot a cracked or crumbling section of concrete at the top of the chimney during spring cleaning, or water starts staining the ceiling near the fireplace after a hard desert rain. The crown is the chimney’s umbrella, and when it fails, everything below it starts taking on water.
Here’s the straight answer up front: a Copperfield crown that’s cracked, spalled, or pulling away from the flue tile needs replacement, not patching. Patching a failed crown in Las Vegas buys you a season at best. The desert sun bakes sealant until it pulls loose, and our winter freeze-thaw cycles work water into every hairline crack. We say the price first and put the repair in writing, so you know exactly what you’re paying before we touch anything.
Which Copperfield Models This Applies To
Copperfield chimney crowns are used across their prefabricated fireplace and chimney system lines, including the Copperfield Estate Series, the Copperfield DC and SC direct-vent models, and several of their older wood-burning chase systems installed in Las Vegas homes built from the early 1990s through the 2010s. The crown itself is the concrete or cementitious cap that seals the top of the chimney chase around the flue pipe.
Here’s where Copperfield owners run into a real compatibility gotcha: Copperfield changed crown dimensions on their direct-vent models around 2008. The older DC series used a crown with a 14-inch flue opening, while the newer DCII models use a 13-inch opening with a deeper drip edge. A crown from one doesn’t sit right on the other, even though both say “Copperfield” on the unit. We verify measurements from the top of the chase before we quote anything.
Aftermarket crowns for Copperfield systems fall into three categories: poured-in-place concrete crowns, pre-cast replacement caps from chimney supply companies, and stainless steel cap-and-crown combos. For Las Vegas heat, we recommend a poured crown with a proper expansion joint around the flue tile or a stainless replacement that won’t crack the way concrete does after ten or fifteen summers of 110-degree exposure. OEM Copperfield crowns are still available for many models, but they cost roughly forty percent more than a quality aftermarket equivalent, and the aftermarket versions from suppliers like Olympia Chimney often carry better weather resistance than the original.
One more thing worth knowing: if your Copperfield unit is under warranty, check your paperwork before you spend money. Some Copperfield crown failures on newer systems are covered. If not, we’ll walk you through the options and give you the price up front either way.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your Copperfield Crown Repair Is Failing
- Cracks wider than a quarter inch across the crown surface. In Las Vegas, the daily temperature swing from freezing winter nights to hot afternoons expands and contracts concrete every single day. Hairline cracks aren’t urgent, but once they widen past a quarter inch, water is getting through to the chase below.
- Spalling, which looks like the top layer of concrete flaking or peeling away. Spalling means moisture has soaked into the crown and is now popping the surface off in chunks. You’ll see small piles of gritty concrete on the roof or in the gutter near the chimney.
- Efflorescence, the white chalky streaks running down the brick or chase siding below the crown. Water is migrating through the crown and carrying minerals out as it evaporates. It’s not just cosmetic. Those streaks mean the chase is getting wet inside, which puts your Copperfield firebox and framing at risk.
- Rust staining around the flue pipe or on the crown surface. Water pooled around the flue is corroding the metal components. In Copperfield direct-vent systems, that corrosion can eventually let gases escape into the chase instead of up the flue, which is a job we take seriously and inspect carefully.
- Water stains on the ceiling around the fireplace chimney chase or a musty smell near the firebox. By the time water shows up inside the house, the crown has been leaking for a while. If you’re seeing ceiling stains in Summerlin or Henderson near the fireplace wall, call us before the next rain.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Most Copperfield crown repairs in Las Vegas run between $600 and $1,200 installed, with the spread driven by three things: the size of the crown, whether we’re removing the old crown completely or building up from sound material, and whether the flue needs a new chimney cap at the same time. Small direct-vent crowns on the lower end of the range. Large custom crowns on older wood-burning chases push toward the higher number.
Your quote includes the full teardown of failed material, proper expansion joint installation around the flue, mixed-and-poured crown compound graded for Nevada weather, and clean-up of the work area around the chimney. If the flue tile itself is cracked, which we see often on Las Vegas homes where ground settling has shifted the chimney, we’ll price that repair separately before any work starts.
Every crown repair gets the Kingswell Guarantee in writing. If the crown fails during the guarantee period, we come back and correct it at no charge, with a free second visit if the repair doesn’t hold. No fine-print exclusions, no “we’ll see what we can do.” It’s covered, plain and simple.
DIY or Call Us?
If you’re comfortable getting on your roof, you can check the crown yourself: look for cracks, flaking concrete, or gaps where the crown meets the flue. Take a picture with your phone and text it to us if you want a straight read on whether it needs work now or can wait a season. We’ll tell you what we see. That’s free, and we’d rather you know than guess.
But the repair itself isn’t a caulk-and-hope job. A proper crown repair means removing the failed material, installing an expansion joint so the crown and flue move independently as the Nevada sun heats and cools them, and pouring a crown mix that’s formulated to flex without cracking. Do it wrong and you’ll be back on the roof next year with the same problem, plus water damage. If you’re unsure about anything, call (725) 220-6109 and we’ll give you a straight answer and a written price before any work begins.
FAQs
A correctly installed Copperfield crown in the Las Vegas climate lasts ten to fifteen years before the next repair cycle. That’s shorter than in milder climates because our UV exposure and temperature swings harden and crack concrete faster.
If the cracks are hairline and the crown isn’t spalling or pulling away from the flue, a re-seal can buy you two or three years. If the concrete is flaking, the crown is loose, or there’s rust staining at the flue, it’s a full replacement. We’ll show you exactly what we see before we quote.
Most crown replacements take four to six hours from roof-up to clean-up. Larger jobs on custom chases run a full day. We schedule a real arrival window and stick to it.
We stock the most common Copperfield crown dimensions and installation materials on the truck, with aftermarket equivalents from Olympia Chimney and other chimney-trade suppliers. For unusual sizes, we source locally in Las Vegas, usually within a day or two. You don’t need to order anything yourself.
