Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Crown Repair: The Las Vegas Owner’s Guide
Crown repair on a Gelco chimney cap or crown system in Las Vegas typically runs between $225 and $475 installed, depending on the crown size and how much of the existing mortar bed needs to be rebuilt, and we stock the Gelco-compatible materials on our trucks so most jobs are done in a single visit. A failing crown is usually found one of two ways: a water stain appears on the ceiling near the fireplace after a desert downpour, or a homeowner glances up and sees cracked, spalled concrete around the top of the flue. The crown is the concrete or mortar slab that caps the chimney and sheds water away from the flue tile, and in Las Vegas it takes a beating from the heat and UV that few other parts of a home do.
We are an independent Las Vegas service provider and not affiliated with Gelco. But we install and repair their crown systems regularly, and we know exactly how they fail in this climate.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco makes a range of chimney caps and crown systems, and the crown repair process applies to most of their top-mounted products, including their standard multi-flue caps, their stainless steel chase covers with concrete crowns, and their older cast-in-place crown forms from the 1990s and early 2000s that are common on Las Vegas track homes built during that boom. The key detail that trips up a lot of homeowners: the crown is not the metal cap itself. The crown is the concrete slab underneath and around the flue. The metal cap sheds rain, but the crown sheds water away from the flue tile and the masonry below. If the crown cracks, water gets into the chimney chase and you get rusted dampers, spalled brick, and eventually, if it goes untouched for years, a compromised flue liner.
Identifying your Gelco setup takes about two minutes. Look at the top of the chimney. If you see a stainless steel cap, there will usually be a Gelco stamp or sticker on the underside of the cap skirt or on the mounting bracket. If the cap is missing a label, measure the outside dimensions of the flue tile, not the cap, because the crown is sized to the flue, not the cap. The other question we hear constantly is whether to buy OEM Gelco replacement parts or a quality aftermarket equivalent. For crown repair specifically, OEM matters less than the mortar mix and the curing process. We use professional-grade, Gelco-compatible materials and a mix rated for high-UV, low-humidity climates. A generic hardware store mix will crack again after one or two Las Vegas summers.

Signs Your Gelco Crown Repair Is Failing
- Water staining on the ceiling or wall near the fireplace. This is the symptom that gets our phone ringing most often in Las Vegas. A cracked crown lets monsoon rain track down through the chase and into the drywall. The stain often appears days after the rain because the water is working its way through insulation first.
- Cracked or crumbling concrete at the top of the chimney. You can see this from the ground with a pair of binoculars. Fine hairline cracks eventually widen as the freeze-thaw cycle, which we do get on winter nights in the Las Vegas valley, works the slab apart. Spalling, which is when chunks of concrete flake off, is the later stage and means the crown is no longer shedding water properly.
- Rust streaks on the chimney chase or around the cap. The metal Gelco cap may be fine, but water working its way through a cracked crown rusts the mounting hardware and the damper below. If you see rust, the water has been getting through for a while.
- A damper that is hard to open or close. Moisture from a failed crown causes the damper plate and hinges to corrode. The damper might groan, stick, or refuse to seat fully. It is rarely the damper’s fault; it is almost always water that should have been shed by the crown.
- A musty smell from the fireplace, especially after rain. Moisture trapped in the chimney chase grows mildew. The smell is usually strongest in summer, when the Vegas heat cooks the damp debris. It is the smell of a small leak becoming a bigger one.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a standard Gelco crown repair in Las Vegas, most jobs run between $225 and $475. Smaller single-flue chimneys sit at the low end. Large multi-flue crowns, or crowns with significant concrete loss that require rebuilding the form, run toward the high end. If the metal Gelco cap itself is bent, rusted through, or missing, that adds to the job cost, typically $150 to $350 more for the cap and hardware, depending on size. You will get a written price before any work starts, and the invoice matches the quote you approved at the door.
What is included in the crown repair: removing the loose or failed concrete, prepping the surface, building up the crown with a mix rated for high-UV desert exposure, and sloping it correctly so water runs away from the flue. We also add a flexible sealant between the flue tile and the new crown, which is a step a lot of crews skip and the single most common reason a repaired crown fails again within a few years. Every crown repair comes with our written guarantee, and if the repair fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge under our 365-Day Done Right Promise.
DIY or Call Us?
If you are comfortable on a ladder and just want to confirm what is wrong, you can safely check a few things. Look for visible cracks, spalled concrete, or a cap that wobbles. Check the damper for rust and stiffness. That inspection will tell you whether a crown issue is likely. What we would not advise is going up with a bag of concrete mix and trying to patch the crown yourself. The reason is simple: the slope matters. A crown that does not shed water away from the flue sends every drop into the chase. That turns a $300 repair into a $2,500 liner and damper replacement, and we have seen that exact sequence play out more times than we can count in Summerlin and Henderson alone.
If the crown has failed, call us at (725) 220-6109 and we will give you a straight answer and a written price. You will know the cost before anything gets touched.
FAQs
A properly built crown repair in Las Vegas using a high-UV-rated mix typically lasts 15 to 20 years. The biggest threat to a crown here is not rain, it is the prolonged sun and heat cycling, which is why the material and the curing process matter more than the brand name on the cap. A poor-quality patch might make it three years; a correct rebuild is a once-every-fifteen-years job.
A hairline crack on a crown that is otherwise sound can sometimes be sealed successfully, but if the concrete is spalling or the crack runs through the slab, patching is a temporary fix at best. The patch material expands and contracts at a different rate than the existing concrete, and the Las Vegas heat will split the seam again, often within one summer. If you want an honest recommendation, call us and we will tell you which situation you have.
Most Gelco crown repair jobs in Las Vegas are done in half a day, including setup, removal of failed material, rebuilding, and cleanup. The curing time depends on the temperature and the mix, but you do not need to wait days before using the fireplace. We will tell you exactly when it is safe to light a fire based on the material used and the weather conditions that day.
We keep the crown repair materials, sealants, and common Gelco-compatible cap hardware on our trucks for most standard Las Vegas chimney sizes. If your chimney is oversized or you need a custom cap, we can usually have it within a few days. We also carry materials from DuraFlex and HeatShield for liner work, so if the crown failure has already allowed water damage to the flue, we can address both on the same visit.
